Issue drain
62% of agile teams run on Jira, and the tool was built for humans staring at dashboards, not AI agents reasoning about your work. Stefan Wolpers argues that Jira’s ticket-centric DNA (mandatory fields, status transitions, workflow schemes) assumes work is “a ticket to be tracked, not a problem to be solved.” That assumption becomes a real liability when you’re trying to hand context to autonomous agents. Atlassian is responding, to be fair: embedding agents directly in Jira, adopting Model Context Protocol, building a Teamwork Graph tracking 100 billion objects. Real infrastructure, not vaporware. But agents don’t need burndown charts and velocity graphs. They need temporal structure: what was planned, what actually happened, what was learned, and why decisions were made. The gap is in what was never structured to begin with. Wolpers proposes a simple experiment: compile three consecutive Sprint Retrospectives into Markdown files and let an AI analyze patterns across them. The structured format surfaces recurring unresolved issues that ticket threads bury in noise. Organizations that separate project knowledge from project tracking will give agents (and their teams) dramatically better reasoning context. The shift from human-readable dashboards to agent-readable structure is structural, not cosmetic.

Debts
The code is clean, the tests pass, and yet fewer engineers on the team can explain why it works or confidently change it. Lizzie Matusov pulls from emerging research to argue that AI-generated code creates two new kinds of debt beyond the traditional technical variety. Cognitive debt accumulates when developers accept AI output without building the mental models that come from implementation friction. Engineers resist modifying code they didn’t write and don’t understand, onboarding slows despite abundant documentation, and knowledge concentrates in whoever prompted the AI rather than spreading through the team. Intent debt is the absence of externalized design rationale, goals, and constraints. When nobody documents why a system was built a certain way, both humans and future AI agents lose the context needed to evolve it. These debts reinforce each other: missing intent documentation prevents shared understanding, weak understanding produces poor decisions, and messy decisions obscure reasoning further. The fix is investing in the connective tissue that AI skips. Code walkthroughs, architectural decision records, domain modeling sessions. The boring stuff that builds shared understanding. A codebase your team can’t reason about is not an asset, no matter how quickly it was generated.

Encoding
Your senior engineers carry your team’s best practices in their heads, and every time a junior dev prompts an AI without that context, you’re rolling the dice on consistency. Rahul Garg, writing on Martin Fowler’s site, argues for treating team standards as versioned, executable infrastructure rather than tribal knowledge. Instead of hoping everyone prompts AI tools the same way, encode your architectural patterns, naming conventions, security thresholds, and error-handling approaches into shared instruction files that live in the repo alongside the code. The AI doesn’t drift because the governance is the workflow. The encoding process itself turns out to be valuable. One team discovered two senior engineers held completely different thresholds for security severity, a disagreement that had never come up because they’d never been forced to write it down. The instructions follow a clean anatomy: role definition, context requirements, categorized standards, and output format. Apply them at generation time for maximum effect, during development for refactoring and security checks, and at review time as a final gate. This matters most at teams of 15+ where you can’t maintain consistency through conversation alone. Your team’s best judgment shouldn’t be locked in anyone’s head. AI just made the cost of not externalizing it impossible to ignore.

Multiplied by zero
AI gave every organization a productivity multiplier, and most used it to subtract. Juan Cruz Martinez frames the choice like so: you can use AI to do more with the same, or do the same with less. Most companies are choosing the latter without ever seriously testing the former. Cost cuts show up on spreadsheets with dollar signs attached. Exploration remains speculative. The spreadsheet wins. Martinez draws on his own career: at Siemens, where the market was stable, optimization made sense. At Auth0, small teams routinely accomplished what previously required entire departments because the culture rewarded operating beyond job descriptions. AI didn’t change what those teams were capable of. It removed the activation energy that kept ambitions on the shelf. Problems parked for years suddenly became addressable. Side projects became real products. Most leadership teams won’t admit this, but they haven’t actually checked whether growth is possible. They haven’t given their newly-supercharged teams one quarter to explore what they could build before deciding to shrink. Martinez acknowledges some markets genuinely can’t absorb doubled output. But most of the layoffs he’s seeing are the path of least resistance dressed up as efficiency.
