Weekly 1:1 prep

Progress, current goals, and blockers

Overview

Prepping for 1:1s takes time you don’t have, and showing up unprepared makes the meeting feel pointless. This preset eliminates prep work by automatically generating a complete briefing for each direct report before every 1:1.

What this is for

This preset solves the chronic problem of under-prepared 1:1s. You know you should review what each person worked on before meeting with them, but between back-to-back meetings and your own work, there’s never enough time. The result is 1:1s that feel reactive instead of strategic, where you’re hearing about last week instead of planning for next week.

The Weekly 1:1 prep preset does the homework for you. Every Monday morning, you get a detailed brief for each direct report covering what they worked on, their current goals, any blockers they reported, and all their merged PRs. You show up to every 1:1 with complete context, ready to have a meaningful conversation instead of scrambling to remember what they’re working on.

Who should use this

Engineering managers with 5+ direct reports who struggle to keep everyone’s work straight. You’ll walk into every 1:1 knowing exactly what each person accomplished and where they’re stuck.

Managers of remote teams who don’t have the benefit of hallway conversations to stay current. You’ll have the same context you’d get from daily standups without attending daily standups.

New managers learning to run effective 1:1s who need structure for their prep. You’ll have a consistent framework for every conversation instead of winging it each week.

The prompt

Summarize what [ person ] worked on in the last 7 days in one broad overview paragraph, then briefly summarize each day. List all of their current goals. List any blockers they reported. List all pull requests they merged.
