Goals as main quests, blockers as dragons


Overview

Main quest: Ship the billing rewrite, 60% complete. New monster sighted: a flaky CI pipeline blocking the path forward. This preset renders your team’s goals as an RPG quest log, with XP for last week’s work and dragons where the blockers are.

What this is for

This preset solves the goal engagement problem. Goal pages are where enthusiasm goes to flatline: percentages tick up, statuses change color, and nobody feels anything. Game designers solved this decades ago. Progress bars, XP, and named monsters make progress feel like progress, which is why people who can’t finish a status report will grind a video game quest for six hours.

The Quest log preset applies that craft to real work. Every Monday, your goals become main quests with progress bars, smaller tasks become side quests, last week’s merges and completions are tallied as XP, and blockers appear as monsters with names. Party members on leave are noted, because every adventuring party needs to know who’s back at the inn.

Who should use this

Team leads with gamers on the team who know exactly what a quest log means to their people. You’ll speak the native language of half your engineers.

Managers of long-grind projects where progress is real but invisible. You’ll make a 5% week feel like XP earned instead of 95% still to go.

Teams that name things – servers, sprints, releases. The blocker that gets named as a monster gets talked about, and the monster that gets talked about gets slain.

Present the [ team name ] team's current goals and last week's progress as an RPG quest log. Cast major goals as main quests with progress bars, smaller tasks as side quests, merged pull requests and completed work as XP earned, and blockers as monsters that must be defeated. Note any party members away on leave.
